February is Black History Month! Every year our nation celebrates the achievements of Black Americans and recognizes our significant role in U.S. history. While Black history is created all year long, Black History Month is a special time of acknowledgement, reflection, and inspiration. This important observance is an opportunity to honor the past, celebrate the present, and create a new vision for the future.

Dr. Kathryn J. Addo
Dr. Kathryn Addo is the Senior Director, Community Relations for JD Financial Group and Associates, Inc. She also serves as a BUILD Leadership Council member. Dr. Addo founded STC Consulting, LLC to help nonprofit organizations attract funding and meet their mission. She enjoys teaching nonprofit seminars and is in demand as a public speaker sharing her passion for community empowerment. A self-described ”people person” Dr. Addo loves sharing time with family and friends.
BLACK PHILANTHROPY: CARRYING ON A TRADITION OF COMMUNITY SERVICE
Black History Month was initially conceived by Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard-trained historian, who hoped to raise awareness of Black people’s contributions to civilizations. The first celebration was held in February 1926 to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Negro History Week later became African American History Month when our nation celebrated its bicentennial.
