National Life Group: Over 175 Years of Putting People First

The story behind our brand

Ask most people what life insurance is for and they’ll tell you it’s for after. After you’re gone. Something your family collects. Something you hope nobody needs for a very long time.

For over 175 years, we’ve seen it differently.

There’s a second thing people get wrong, too. A lot of us grow up assuming this kind of security is meant for somebody else. Older people. Richer people. People who find complicated financial stuff easier to understand than we do. That isn’t true either, and we’ve spent just as long proving it.

Who we are

National Life Group is a mutual life insurance and annuities company, and we’ve been at this since 1848. That’s a long time, but longevity on its own isn’t the point. What matters is what we’ve done with it: a storied history of putting people first, and a refusal to stop.

As a mutual company, we answer to our policyholders, not to outside shareholders. The people who hold the promises are the people we work for. When the interests of a faceless market and the interests of a real family point in different directions, we already know which way we’re facing. That structure isn’t a footnote in our history. More than a century ago, we fought to stay independent. We’re still independent today, and that’s not by accident.

What we believe

Here’s the simplest way to say it: understanding brings peace of mind, so we can all live life more fully.

The world feels uncertain right now. There’s a lot of noise, a lot of mistrust, and a lot of pressure that makes planning for the future feel harder than it used to. For all the importance people place on it, only about half of American adults today have life insurance, and a record 102 million say they need it or need more of it.¹ That’s not because people stopped caring about their families. It’s because the subject got confusing, intimidating, and easy to put off.

We think that’s a problem worth solving. Protection and confidence aren’t reserved for a lucky few. They’re for people who clock in downtown and people who work from home. For the teacher, the firefighter, the small business owner, and the grandparent chasing kids around the backyard.

What that looks like

We believe insurance should be built around the life you’re living, not just the end of it. Protection for your family when something happens. Opportunity for living benefits when illness changes your plans. Potential for guaranteed income that helps your money last as long as you do.

We said it first. A policy shouldn’t just be there someday. It should be there when you need it.

Why this matters now

We’ve spent generations doing right by the people and communities we serve, and we’re not done. Our mission is to bring peace of mind to everyone we touch. That’s a goal bigger than any single policy: to put real protection within reach of more Americans, and to make thinking about the future feel a little more hopeful.

We’re not here just to help you plan for the end. We’re here for everything before it.

Living benefits may be provided by riders, which are supplemental benefits that can be added to a life insurance policy and are not suitable unless you also have a need for life insurance. Riders are optional, may require additional premium and may not be available in all states or on all products. This is not a solicitation of any specific insurance policy. The use of cash value life insurance to provide a resource for accumulation goals assumes that there is first a need for life insurance. The ability of a life insurance contract to accumulate sufficient cash value to help meet accumulation goals will be dependent upon the amount of extra premium paid into the policy, and the performance of the policy, and is not guaranteed. Policy loans and withdrawals reduce the policy’s cash value and/or death benefit and may result in a taxable event. Withdrawals up to the basis paid into the contract and loans thereafter will not create an immediate taxable event, but substantial tax ramifications could result upon contract lapse or surrender. Surrender charges may reduce the policy’s cash value in early years.
