Disability Pride Month: Celebrating Ability and Preparing for Life’s Unexpected Moments

When I was 19 years old, a car accident changed my life forever, leaving me with a permanent disability. In an instant, my future looked very different than I had imagined. That experience changed the way I think about life’s uncertainties and reinforced something I’ve come to believe deeply: disability can affect anyone, at any stage of life.

That’s one of the reasons Disability Pride Month is so important. It’s an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the abilities, resilience, and contributions of people with disabilities while continuing to build communities and workplaces where everyone feels valued, respected, and included.

A disability doesn’t define a person’s potential. Every day, people with disabilities make meaningful contributions to their families, careers, and communities. When we focus on ability rather than limitation, we create a stronger, more inclusive future for everyone.

My experience also changed the way I think about protecting what I’ve worked hard to build.
