How Did Educators Spend the Summer? Thinking About the Classroom

With Labor Day past us, school’s back in session and both educators and students are getting back to basics.

But we’ve been reminded again that the classroom is never far away for the nation’s educators.

They spend much of their summer break immersed in the work of school.

We conduct an annual survey of educators through our LifeChanger of the year recognition program. And by now, many of the results are not a surprise.

Teachers work hard. Every month of the year, every day of the year.

This year, 77 percent of respondents said preparing for the next school year would be part of their summer; 54 percent said summer was a time for professional development; and about half said summer leisure activities would make their list of top three activities.

And that’s not just over the summer. We found that nearly eight in 10 spend at least 7 hours per week over and above the requirements on school work and more than half dedicate 10 hours or more.

That’s why we are so passionate about our LifeChanger of the Year program. We’re dedicated to honoring the work of educators all over the country.
